About Camp
-
Arts & Science Literacy Camp serves children and families across Milwaukee County with an innovative approach that integrates literacy, fine arts, and sciences. Our dedicated team—including reading specialists, behavior specialists, certified teachers, and arts and science professionals—creates a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
Our Whole Child Approach
-
ASL Camp embraces a "whole child" model that addresses all aspects of literacy: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Weekly themes provide a framework for arts-integrated projects that promote literacy growth while engaging students' creativity. Our approach goes beyond academics to support social-emotional learning, teaching conflict resolution strategies and effective communication skills.
Making a Difference in Milwaukee
While our beloved Milwaukee community faces significant challenges—with only 13% of elementary students reading at grade level—ASLC tells a different story.
At our camp, 50% of our 1st-8th graders leave at or above proficiency in reading, showcasing the effectiveness of our integrated approach.
For ten years, ASLC has proudly served over 4,200 learners from across Milwaukee County. Our vibrant community includes students from diverse backgrounds: 33% Black, 16% Latino, 10% Asian, and 41% white, with 15% of students at or below poverty level.
We particularly excel at supporting neurodivergent learners—45% of our students receive special education services and have IEPs.
